Codice Series: Codice 115
Sandra Martinez 2021
First Edition of 50 archival pigment prints
The original paintings were done with gouache, sue me ink and acrylic on book pages from an 1800s German missionary text gifted by Sandra's father.
Done with contour lines and minimal color, the work was generated during gears of eldercare as a form of journaling for the artist.
Many of the drawings seem to represent two figures coming together to form one, while maintaining their individuality, influence by the strong columnar structure of the printed page.
For Martinez, it illustrates the bonded union that is possible between all humans. When love and respect are chosen, differing perspectives and experiences are not barriers but invitations to dialogue and understanding.
As part of their 33-year collaboration, a few designs originating from Sandra's codice series have been woven by Wenceslao Martinez including Discusión, Contorno, and Luz.Signed on verso as well.
